Adult Literacy Numeracy Communication Training NZ

Powerful Effective

Workplace Communication Training

Adult workforce literacy issues affect people from all walks of life because jobs, processes and technology constantly change.

Phil O'Reilly, Business NZ's chief executive, believes low basic literacy, language and numeracy skills in New Zealand's workforce is holding back growth and constraining productivity.

"Businesses are subject to many opportunities and challenges in adapting to complex and rapidly changing technologies, and meeting increased local and global market demands. "We need a skilled and productive workforce if we are to rapidly respond, yet it is impossible to be agile if a large proportion of the workforce finds it difficult to fulfil everyday work requirements".

Even jobs described as low skilled require considerable literacy and numeracy proficiency for effective communication with customers and colleagues, solving problems, understanding instructions and completing paperwork.

Issues such as skill gaps and shortfalls will only worsen once an improved global economy boosts local and international demand. Add an increasing reliance on immigrants and an ageing population to the mix, and it becomes even more important to ensure those entering our workforce and those already in it have the literacy and numeracy skills they need. Source NZ Herald 12.01.12

"Thoroughly enjoyed every session I have attended. Very informative and personal. I felt I was able to relate to the material and discussions, which meant it stayed with me and I am able to use what I have learnt in my job and at home. Very good speaker/presenter."

Increased Productivity

A significant proportion of adults have literacy and numeracy skills below that which are considered necessary to participate fully in a modern, high-skilled economy.

Higher literacy and numeracy skills are associated with higher earnings, improved workplace productivity, better workplace safety and increased chances of stable employment. The skills support success in higher level qualifications and attainment of other workplace skills and the social benefits can include improved personal well-being, social development of individuals, whānau and communities, better health and better parenting.

Low literacy and numeracy skills often lead to low workplace productivity and safety concerns, social exclusion, poverty and even inter-generational disadvantage. Source: Adult Literacy and Numeracy Implementation Strategy, Tertiary Education Commission, September 2012.

Google is not the answer to everything

We have more options available to us than ever before. Online universities and educational institutions offer a wide range of courses to improve our understanding of the world around us and you can choose virtually any topic and find information on your tablet, computer or phone without ever leaving your home.
Search engines like Google and Bing are useful resources for many things, but the limitations of the internet to deliver "effective learning", as opposed to merely supplying information, are readily apparent. Information is only one part of the learning process and simply increasing the amount of detail we know about, does not necessarily mean you have have learned how to utilise it.

In order to truly make a difference in your organisation, it is extremely important to design a tailored programme and work alongside a professional training provider for your professional development needs. There are certainly some great online learning facilities but in most cases the student and the organisation do not achieve the outcome they were hoping for.

Topics such as Personal Relations, Conflict Resolution, Communication, Literacy and Numeracy often require deeper levels of inter personal engagement than online platforms can provide. The tutors at Sarah's Solutions have real-world experience across a range of topics and industries to ensure you and your organisation achieve the maximum results the training.

"A qualified teaching workforce is essential, and the more qualified this workforce, the greater progress made by learners. This applies
for the teaching of literacy, numeracy and ESOL"
